Wheat should begin to flower sometime next week in the southernmost regions of PA. Our current warm, dry weather conditions are not favorable for development of the spores that cause head scab (FHB) due to low humidity and no rainfall. However, this can change quickly if we continue to have warmth along with the rains that are predicted late this week (May 13). As Pierce Paul (The Ohio State University) says, “Rain + warmer weather + wheat flowering = increased risk for head scab and vomitoxin.” Keep an eye on the FHB forecasting site and be prepared to apply a fungicide for FHB if your county’s risk level jumps to “High” around the time your wheat is about to flower.
