Continued wet weather has resulted in elevated FHB risk in DE and E MD. I
expect elevated levels of risk through next week (5/8) with additional
storms forecast coupled with slightly warmer temperatures. Most of the
remaining wheat in DE and E MD will be at or approaching flowering sometime
in the next 7-10 days. Applications of Prosaro, Caramba, or Proline applied
from the start of flowering through 5 days post are most efficacious for
scab suppression and will reduce FHB by roughly 45% compared to untreated
checks. The start of flowering is when 50% of the main tillers have started
to flower from the center of the head. If your fields just started flowering
it may be advisable to wait to make applications when the wet weather clears
out Sunday-Monday. Check fields 18-20 days after the start of flowering to
determine if scab is at significant levels.
