Maryland wheat is in flower in many fields in the south (lower Eastern Shore
and Southern Maryland) and is entering flowering in the central shore area.
Unfortunately, due to continued wet and humid conditions, even though
temperatures are somewhat below normal, enough spores are likely to have
developed and conditions are suitable for infection. The weather forecast
for the next week to ten days is favorable for scab. Susceptible and
moderately susceptible wheat coming into flower is at high to moderate risk
of scab in the southern half of the state. The risk level for moderately
resistant wheat is likely to go up to moderate if wet and humid conditions
persist. Fungicides should be applied as close as possible as equipment and
weather permits to the initial flower to five days after application window.
The only recommended products are still Prosaro (Bayer) and Caramba (BASF).
These products even when applied at the optimum timing (early flower) can
only reduce the vomitoxin, DON, by 40-60%. Spraying very susceptible to
susceptible wheat cultivars when conditions are high risk for an extended
period starting at flowering may have unacceptable DON levels at harvest.
This is why integration of resistance with fungicides has been recommended
to manage scab. As wheat comes into flower in the northern half of the
state, continue to monitor this website for risk assessments to help
determine whether or not a fungicide application is warranted.
