Winter wheat in most areas of Pennsylvania ranges from Feekes 9 to 10 this week and heading and flowering will likely occurring within the next week to 10 days. Powdery mildew levels have generally been low on wheat as have the leaf blotch diseases due to the dry and warm weather. Growth is generally shorter than normal and we have seen some evidence of frost damage in selected fields. Fungicide applications for the mildew and leaf blotch diseases should be based on the presence of these diseases on the upper leaves in the canopy. Triazole fungicides such as Caramba, Proline and Prosaro have the most activity on Fusarium Head Blight when applied at flowering. These products also provide good control of powdery mildew, leaf blotches and rust when applied then for the critical early grain fill period. Monitor the Risk Assessment Tool as we approach heading to get a better assessment of the potential for head scab.
