Wheat has just begun to flower in Maryland. A significant portion of the crop will come into flower during the next week. Current risk forecasts are still relatively low despite the frequent showers. I believe that our wet conditions are suitable for the development of spores on corn debris. However the periods of cool temperatures are keeping the spore production below optimum. The periods of cool temperatures and lower RH are also not conducive for infection if those spores were to reach flowering heads. This is why the current risk level is low but also why it could change rapidly. If several days of showers develop with warmer temperatures as is currently forecast for Sunday through Wednesday, we could see a rapid change in the risk assessment and some areas could be at risk of developing scab.
