2 May 2011. The fusarium head blight model indicates the conditions have not been highly favorable for inoculum development. Wheat has headed and is flowering in most ares of the Commonwealth. If a grower is inclined to apply a fungicide it should be done this week, but it may not be needed.

Fungicide use for head blight management is not universally recommended at this time. Local conditions (rain and high humidity) may be favorable for head blight development. Remember, the recommended products, Prosaro and Caramba, will not suppress head blight if applied before heading. The best performance of these products is achieved when they are applied at the beginning of flowering. Recent research indicates that applications up to 5 days after flowering may still be able to suppress head blight development. However, applications are generally less effective after infection occurs so it is critical to make the application as close to flowering as possible. Be aware that there is a 30 day pre-harvest restriction on the application of these fungicides.
