Most wheat in Maryland has flowered. Only late planted northern fields and secondary tillers on late maturing cultivars are yet to flower and are expected to do so this week. The scab risk is low because conditions favorable for disease have been marginal at best and discontinuous. Showers early this week will not be enough to drastically change the risk level. Because conditions have not been completely dry, expect to see a few scattered scabby heads scattered throughout the state but incidence and severity will be very low. Fungicides are not warranted for scab suppression. Note the pre-harvest interval for both Prosaro and Caramba fungicides is 30 days. Typically after initial flowering we have 3.5 to 4.5 weeks of grain fill before plants mature and begin drying down. To ensure that fungicide residues on grain do not exceed allowable limits, those who are still contemplating fungicide applications, e.g. in cases where rust is threatening, must do so very soon.
