Wheat in Kansas is developing ahead of schedule this season. Wheat in the Southeast portion of the state should be at heading stages of growth this week. Wheat in south central and central KS is likely in the boot stage. Wheat is most vulnerable to Fusarium head blight during flowering and the early stages of grain development. These growth stages will occur in about 7 to 14 days for portions of southern KS. There is currently an area of high and moderate risk in central KS; however, the wheat in this area is not at the critical stages of growth yet. The weather forecast indicates dry weather for the next 3 days and I expect the risk of disease to decrease during this time. Risk may return at the end of the week if rain returns to the region.
