TO: US Barley Workers

USDA-ARS has moved forward on filling two Category 1 research positions
vacated due to retirements that are of great importance to stakeholders at
its Cereal Crops Research Unit in Madison, WI, which is greatly appreciated.
In June, the CCRU filled the position vacated by Dr. Ronald Skadsen when he
retired, with a research molecular biologist and geneticist to conduct
research on the genetic adaptation of barley to abiotic stress (heat and
drought) and its impact on quality to help develop breeding strategies to
mitigate its impact. Dr. Ramamurthy Mahalingam (aka Mali), a professor from
the Department of Biochemistry & Molecular Biology, Oklahoma State
University, with extensive experience in abiotic research was hired and
started work on June 29.

ARS is now moving forward on filling the position vacated by Dr. Mark
Schmitt when he retired. The new position's specific responsibilities are to
define and evaluate parameters responsible for conferring enhanced
regulation of germination and malting quality to barley (e.g. preharvest
sprouting) and to oversee the malt quality phenotyping of early generation
barley lines developed nationally by public sector barley breeders.
