Wheat in the northern tier of counties of Maryland will be coming into
flower this week (15 May - 21 May). The risk of scab infection will remain
high to moderate this week. We are now getting a few days without rain but
are still expected to get a couple of days interspersed with showers. As a
result the risk map will fluctuate with improving conditions (lower risk)
followed by immediate jumps back to high risk. There has also been a report
of stripe rust in the Thurmont area. Flowering application of the
fungicides, Prosaro or Caramba, are advised to manage scab and stripe rust.
A single application applied at early flower to about 5 days later is
recommended. Forward facing nozzles, approx 30 degrees, rather than standard
downward facing nozzles are recommended for ground applications to improve
coverage of heads. Lastly, since scabby heads will be present in most fields
throughout the state to some degree, plan to harvest with increased fan
speeds and settings to reduce the light toxin-containing scabby seed from
harvested material.
