Wheat continues to flower in DE and E shore MD and will continue through
next week. I expect that the risk for FHB will remain elevated for
susceptible and moderately resistant wheat as a result of continued rains
and a potential for additional wet weather. Applications of Caramba,
Prosaro, or Proline should start when approximately 50% of the main tillers
have started flowering from the head. Research has shown that applications
can be made 5-6 days after the start of flowering without a significant loss
of efficacy, Applications made prior to flowering are unlikely to be
efficacious, and waiting longer than the established 5-day window is not
unadvised given current environmental conditions. Even if applied properly,
fungicides only reduce visual symptoms by 50% and DON by 45%, on average.
Application of these fungicides to susceptible varieties under conditions of
high FHB risk may not result in satisfactory control of FHB/DON. The use of
a moderately resistant variety in addition to a recommended fungicide,
applied properly, can improve FHB reduction to over 75%. Check fields 18-21
days after flowering to determine scab levels. Additional information can be
