There may be a few late planted fields in the northern tier that have only
recently come into flower. Scab risk is low, thus fungicides for those
fields should only be considered if other diseases are potential issues. The
high temperatures forecast for this week will hasten plant maturity. Scout
fields for symptoms of scab 14-18 days after flowering to determine if scab
infection occurred. Fields with scab symptoms should be combined with
equipment adjusted to reduce light-weight infected seed, i.e. increased fan
speeds. It is the light-weight infected seed that contains the highest
levels of vomitoxin. Increasing the clean out of light-weight seed will
increase the chances that a scab infected crop will pass inspection at the
elevator.
