The majority of wheat in the lower tier of PA is now in flower, while
farther north heading is taking place. We have pockets of Medium to High
risk in Fayette, Somerset and Westmoreland Counties as well as areas of
Medium risk in southern York, Lancaster and Chester Counties. These risk
areas diminish as we move into drier conditions this weekend. Those of you
who have wheat flowering in the next few days in Centre, Clearfield, Indiana
and Cambria Counties should also consider a fungicide application. Anyone
growing VERY susceptible varieties across the state may benefit from a
fungicide application if your wheat is set to flower in the next several
days.
Other diseases starting to develop at low levels include powdery mildew and
tan spot. Any fungicide applications targeted toward head scab control will
also help protect the flag leaf against these diseases.
