Wheat in Delaware is flowering, and will continue to flower over the next
week to ten days. Recent pop up thunderstorms and additional rain forecast
in the future may elevate risk in some areas. Fungicides should be applied
in at least 10 gal/A (ground) or 5 gal/A (air). Application can be made 6
days after the start of flowering without significant dropoff in scab
suppression (45-50% reduction in vomitoxin and scab severity). The
recommended fungicides include Caramba, Prosaro, and Proline. Strobilurins
should not be applied to the grain head. The use of a moderately resistant
wheat variety will significantly reduce scab risk (as indicated by the
model). Scab is most effectively suppressed by combining a moderately
resistant variety and a recommended fungicide. Use of a fungicide on a
susceptible variety will not be sufficient to suppress vomitoxin and scab in
a moderate to severe scab event.
