[Fhb-update_ma] FHB Update from MD, 05/15/15

FHB Updates - Mid Atlantic SWW Region fhb-update_ma at scabusa.org

Flowering has progressed to the central counties in Maryland and in late
planted fields in the lower shore and Southern Maryland. Weather has not
been conducive for large scale spore development and buildup. If rain
materializes as forecast in the next few days, only very susceptible
varieties could get enough scab to develop vomitoxin levels that could be
problematic. Fungicides should be considered for very susceptible wheat that
is in the 6-day window (initial flowering to 6 days after). Most other
varieties flowering at this time should only develop relatively low levels
of infection that do not warrant a fungicide application. However check this
site for risk reassessment especially if rainfall occurs over several days
this coming week.
Stripe rust has been confirmed in Southern Maryland. However that site has
been sprayed with fungicides. Spread from this field should be limited.
Nevertheless other fields could have been affected by the same spore
transport event that infected this known site. Fields should be inspected
for signs of infection as fungicides at flowering will be the last chance to
prevent damage if infection has occurred.
