Most Delaware wheat is at or near flag leaf (FGS 8) with some a bit further
ahead. Warmer temperatures in the forecast will speed up development, likely
putting us in flowering around the 15th of May, give or take. Current
forecasts are calling for dry, hot weather over the next two weeks which, if
this occurs, will result in low scab risk levels. Regardless, growers should
finalize plans for scab management in wheat. The fungicides Prosaro and
Caramba are the most efficacious for scab management. Proline is a good
option if following small grains with a vegetable crop such as lima beans.
If strobilurins (e.g. Headline, Quadris, Quilt, Aproach Prima, Stratego) are
used they should not be applied to the head as this may increase vomitoxin
development in grain. Remember: the most efficacious applications are those
applied from the start of flower (FGS 10.5.1) until approximately 6 days
after the start of flower. Applications made earlier than FGS 10.5.1 are not
recommended.
