The scab risk level has fallen to low. Most wheat from the mid-shore and
south is a few days to a week past flower. That crop should no longer be
considered for fungicide applications because of pre-harvest label
restrictions. Wheat from Central Maryland and North is still coming into
flower. If rains develop in the next 5 days then a fungicide application to
suppress scab may still be needed there. Consult this web site for risk
assessment over the next few days to determine if a fungicide is needed.
Wheat that is not yet in flower should not be sprayed. Best suppression is
achieved when fungicides are applied at early flowering. Applications made
up to 5 days after flowering begins are nearly as good as early flowering,
and some suppression has been demonstrated with applications 1-3 days before
flowering (on fully emerged heads). For those considering ground
applications, nozzles angled 30° into the direction of travel provide
better coverage of the heads than traditional downward facing nozzles.
