FHB Commentary for PA, 6/3/13
Wheat in central PA has progressed rapidly through heading and flowering
during the last week. In general, conditions were warm and dry and the risk
map projections were generally low in our area during most of the heading
period. Because of the rapid wheat development, the dispersed nature of
wheat production, and some variation in planting dates and maturity in our
region, it has often been difficult to achieve ideal timing of fungicides on
many fields. In a high risk year, this could lead to variation in protection
against scab. Growers may still realize good suppression of other late
season wheat diseases such as glume blotch, leaf blotch and leaf rust, which
in some years can lead to yield responses and improved test weight. Early
season mildew levels were relatively low in our region but now we are having
some reports of cereal leaf beetle in some areas of the state. Prospects now
seem to be good for some high yields, low scab and good grain quality in our
region.
