The risk of scab has increased to a moderate level for most of Maryland due
to the warming trend and continued shower activity. Wheat is at flower or a
few days past in the southern production areas and beginning to flower in
the central production areas of the state. Fungicide applications should be
considered for wheat in flower in these central and southern areas. Wheat
that has not yet flowered is not susceptible. Considering that conditions
are expected to turn cool and dry by Mother's day, wheat that is not yet
flowering is expected to be at low risk of infection. Fungicide applications
can be made up to 5 days after flowering for suppression of the disease and
reduction of vomitoxin in the finished grain. No stobilurin or
strobilurin-containing fungicide should be used. Only Prosaro, Caramba or
Proline are registered for flowering applications and are recommended.
