Wheat in Maryland ranges from heading in southern parts of the state to flag
leaf or early boot in the north and west. Flowering will begin this week on
the lower Shore and in Southern Maryland and possibly on some early planted
earlier maturing cultivars in the central portions of the state. Persistent
cold nights and cool temperatures have not been very favorable for
development of the scab-causing fungus. The forecast for chances of rain
through much of the week will be favorable for spore development but
temperatures will remain below optimum. The risk of disease is therefore
currently low. Fungicide applications are not necessary for scab management
at this time. However, If temperatures increase or if showers are extensive
and continue through next week then the risk level will increase. Also note
that stripe rust has been discovered in Kentucky and Tennessee. Spores of
stripe rust could be transported with the frontal system this week into our
area. The recommended fungicides for scab management will also provide
control of rust. Fungicides for scab management must be applied at early
flower to about 5 days later to be effective for scab. If they are applied
at heading little or no protection against scab is achieved. Monitor this
website for changes in conditions that may affect your decisions for
fungicide use this season.
