April 17, 2012 â The risk of scab is very low in Maryland. It has been too dry for appreciable spore development (inoculum). Therefore even if a few showers develop later this week the risk will remain low. Early planted wheat on the lower shore has flowered, and much of the lower shore wheat crop will flower by the end of the week. Wheat in the central portion of the state is mostly at the boot stage or beginning to head, and in northern sections wheat is generally at the flag leaf stage. Most of our crop will flower over the next 10 days to two weeks. If several days of rainfall develops prior to crop flowering consult this forecasting system to determine if the risk level has changed. No fungicide applications for scab are recommended at this time.
