As wheat in the central to northern regions begins to flower this week, our risk levels for scab infection are low across the state. Continued dry weather in the forecast suggests that scab infection will not be a great threat in these areas. Wheat crops in the southern parts of PA that are beyond flowering should be monitored for development of symptoms for the next few weeks. Full symptoms will usually be apparent by 3 weeks after flowering. Fields that show medium to high levels of symptoms should be harvested with a high fan speed on the combine. This will clean out some of the infected seed (which is typically lighter) and will ultimately reduce overall toxin level in the final product.
