Wheat is progressing in maturity- perhaps a several days ahead of schedule and is well past the stage for infection to occur or for fungicides to be applied. Most fields appear to have low levels of scab, but there is some scab present and some fields with a 2-5% incidence can be found. Now is the time to do scouting for headscab incidence, before the wheat looses it green color in the heads. Scouting now can help to identify fields that might be most problematic, although I suspect they will be relatively few this year compared to our situation last year. Some field edges, next to trees and in low lying areas, may show more scab than in the whole field, so be sure to consider this in your scouting. Some varieties are showing increased levels of glume blotch and leaf rust. Some fields with heavy crops experienced lodging with the storms that moved through the state last week. Overall it appears that the risk tool predicted the low incidence of scab we are seeing this ye
ar in many areas. Nearly 80% of Pennsylvania wheat is rated good to excellent- we are looking forward to a good harvest.
