Our wheat has been flowering in central PA and is in the early grain fill stages in southern counties. As the crop development advances, the susceptibility to Fusarium Head Blight should decrease. With the onset of humid weather conditions, the risk of FHB has increased to a moderate level in some areas. Most areas in the central part of the state remain at a low risk according to the model and the moderate risk areas in southcentral counties are past the peak times for infection. Warm sunny weather later this week is causing the risk to decline across the state. We may likely see some Stagonospora and Leaf Rust appear in the crop as it matures in the next several weeks. Some crops are showing signs of looped heads associated with chilling injury that occured two weeks ago. At this point I feel our crop in on track for much less scab than we had last year, I suspect levels will be average or below average across the state.
