(19 May 2010) Today we find the first high risk prediction for the 2010 season for Kent and Queen Anne Counties and for Alleghany and Garrett Counties. This is mainly due to several days of showers. However, temperatures have been marginal for spore development and infection. Spore loads should be relatively low due to cool temperatures, late timing relative to crop development and short duration of moisture levels favorable for disease. Depending on stage of wheat development this coupled with the forecasted T-storms and warmer conditions this weekend could produce some infection in wheat in the high-risk regions. Wheat in these regions that just flowered or was within a week of flowering would be expected to get infected but at a relatively low incidence. Wheat that is a week or more beyond flowering may get infected but not display symptoms before normal crop senescence. Fungicides should only be considered for wheat currently at flower in the high-risk regions if planted
no-till into corn stubble or where significant corn debris is in and near the wheat field. Wheat in tilled ground with little corn debris on the surface or planted after soybeans even in the high-risk areas is unlikely to get significant disease.
