Wheat is just beginning to start flowering in our trials in Lancaster in the earliest lines and later lines are just finishing up head emergence. In central PA, heads are still in the boot stage in most fields. By later this week and earlier next week flowering should be beginning in earnest around the state. It seems like our weather pattern may be shaping up to be cool with short periods of rain interspersed with sunny days, which should have lower risk for scab than last year. The dry spring to date has likely reduced Fusarium innoculum levels in the state. The fungus prefers warm and humid conditions during flowering. Currently wheat scab risk is low throughout the state based on model predictions. But rainy weather is moving through the state today (5/11) and more is forecast again late in the week and perhaps again early next week, with warmer conditions and more humidity next week. I would continue to monitor the model carefully and also wheat development and c
onsider fungicide applications if conditions warrant.
