Most North Carolina wheat is flowering the last week of April or the first week of May. April has been mostly dry with low humidity, so recent conditions have not been favorable for scab development. As of May 7, the map shows slightly elevated risk in Tyrrell and Hyde counties due to rain on April 4, and some wheat may still be flowering there, but conditions are dry, and fields with the highest yield potential are mostly not in the areas indicated as red (high-risk) on the map. If your wheat varieties have not yet flowered and are susceptible or moderately susceptible, check your scab risk at this site often in the next 10 days. Fungicide for head scab control should only be applied at early- to mid-flowering. Variety ratings can be found here: http://www.smallgrains.ncsu.edu/SmartGrains/No26SCAB.pdf.
