The risk of Fusarium head blight appears to be decreasing in southeast Kansas. Some parts of southeast KS were at moderate or high risk during the last week of April just prior to flowering. The fungus that causes head blight probably has the moisture it needs to reproduce on crop residues and release spores. If wet weather returns this week or if we see heavy dew, we may still see unacceptable levels of head blight in some fields. Growers wanting to use a fungicide to suppress potential disease development should be applying fungicides at flowering stage of growth. Fungicides such as Prosaro, Proline, and Caramba are the best option for control of head blight. Products containing tebuconazole would also be an option, but offer slightly lower levels of disease suppression.
