The disease prediction models are indicating moderate or high levels of risk for parts of north central and northeastern Kansas this past week. Most of the wheat in this area should be past flowering when the crop is most vulnerable for infection. We may still see some infection occur in late flowering fields in these regions of the state. Wheat that is 3 to 4 days past flowering is not a candidate for a fungicide application. The efficacy of these treatments is questionable and application at this growth stage will likely push the 30 pre-harvest interval too closely.
It appears that most wheat in southeast Kansas has avoided Fusarium head blight this year. This area of the state had received more rain during the last week of April just as it was entering the flowering stages of growth. The low levels of disease observed in this area are good news as this region has had problems with FHB in the past.
