The 40th biennial Barley Improvement Conference
(BIC) will be held at the Hacienda Hotel in
historic Old Town, San Diego, California. The
BIC, which was first held in 1946, provides
barley researchers, producers, and end-users the
opportunity to hear reports on the status of
barley research programs and to meet and exchange
information and ideas. The BIC will be sponsored
by AMBA and barley grower organizations, with a
registration fee to cover non-sponsored
costs. Registration instructions will be provided in the next announcement.

A block of rooms is being held at the Hacienda
Hotel until December 10, 2014. If you reserve
your room by this date, you will qualify for the
special Conference rate of $119.00, plus taxes &
fees, for single or double occupancy. All
participants are responsible for making their own
lodging reservations and should indicate to the
hotel that they are with the American Malting
Barley Association group. The hotel has parking available at $14 a day.

on the Horizon Lynn Gallagher, UC-Davis
The afternoon discussion session will be devoted
to Hot Topics and Emerging Issues providing
growers, researchers, and end-users the
opportunity to explore approaches to address
preharvest sprouting and the question Beer flavor does barley matter?
The BIC will continue the discussion on flavor
with a talk by banquet speaker, Joseph Hertrich,
Anheuser-Busch, Retired Group Director of Brewing
Materials, "One Brewer's Observations on Malt Flavor"
The BIC will follow the independently run
USDA-NIFA funded Triticeae (barley & wheat)
Coordinated Agricultural Project (TCAP)

annual meeting which will be held on Sunday,
January 11 at the nearby Town & Country
Hotel. You are encouraged to plan on attending
both meetings. The TCAP has a special opening
session for stakeholders to bring them up to date
and for Q&A, followed by talks with highlights of TCAP accomplishments.
