Registration is open and the program completed 
for the 40th biennial Barley Improvement 
Conference (BIC) sponsored by AMBA and barley 
grower organizations.  The BIC will start with a 
reception on Sunday, January 11 at 7 pm, with an 
all day program with dinner on Monday, January 
12.  You should plan on attending this 
informative and unique networking event. The BIC 
provides barley researchers, producers, and 
malting, brewing, and distilling end-users the 
opportunity to hear reports on the status of 
barley research programs and to meet and exchange information and ideas.

The BIC Technical Program is complete and will include the following talks:

New Virulent races of barley leaf rust and stem 
rust pathogens in the United States - 
Jayaveeramuthu Nirmala, University of Minnesota

The afternoon discussion session will be devoted 
to Hot Topics and Emerging Issues providing 
growers, researchers, and end-users the 
opportunity to explore approaches to address 
preharvest sprouting and the question Beer 
flavor, does barley matter? Oregon State 
University, with collaborators New Glarus and 
Sierra Nevada, plan a taste testing with beers 
made from Copeland, Full Pint, and Klages barley malt.

The BIC will continue the discussion on flavor 
with a talk by dinner speaker, Joseph Hertrich, 
Retired, Anheuser-Busch, Group Director of 
Brewing Materials, "One Brewer's Observations on Malt Flavor"
